Silence equals death – and some of you should shut your fucking mouths. I mean you Eminem and you Tyler the Creator (of hate) and all of you who toss around words that were born in denigration and then excuse yourself and scoff at me for getting upset about your thoughtless, defamatory, damaging, homicidal use of language.
I’m so tired of this.
I am a writer. I am a reader. I am a human being and we communicate PRIMARILY through symbols called WORDS – and the words we use are SYMBOLS of SYMBOLS, full of meaning and history – AND THEY FUCKING MATTER.
SO WATCH YOUR FUCKING LANGUAGE!
I don’t have the energy this morning for a long diatribe about the moronic thoughtless heartless idiotic languaging of people and their ridiculous efforts to excuse their part in creating a culture where it is okay to bash those “not like us” – to belittle, to burn, to beat, to tie to a fence and murder, to wear your white hoods of hatred and let your fear be the death of others.
If you use the word “faggot” in your lyrics or your speech, or you support people who do, then you are at least in part responsible for that hatred, that cultural bias, and those beatings, deaths, and suicides of gay people afraid to be gay, or targeted for being gay.
Eminem and Tyler the Creator; by creating an atmosphere of cultural bias in which it is okay to speak hate speech, you are accessories to every crime committed against BGLQT people. An accessory is a person who assists in the commission of a crime, but who does not actually participate in the commission of the crime as a joint principal.
If you use the word “nigger” – Richie Icnognito – same thing. You are responsible for every lynching hate crime and Trayvon Martin.
And it is SO ridiculously prevalent – EPIDEMIC – that I can’t even begin to name those who use the words “Bitch” and “Cunt” – but you are misogynists and anti-woman.
And all you BGLQT folk who use the word “faggot” (or its like) and people of color who use the word “nigger” or “niggah” and women who use the words “bitch” or “cunt” – you do NOT get a pass either. Internalizing cultural bias and belittling and hate and then claiming that using the language is to own it and take it back –
I am so sick of this. Read this on Huffington Post by John J. Caswell Jr. He says it far better and with less anger.
